New! The Sarah Jane Wedding Invitation Collection

I’ve started a brand new store on Zazzle called StyleMebridal. There are only a few designs uploaded at the moment but more due to be added over the coming days.

My newest addition is the ‘Sarah Jane’ collection. It is very elegant! I have uploaded it in several colour combinations, but if you have a particular colour scheme in mind, drop me a mail through the store or leave a comment here and I can upload with your chosen colours.

I’m going to share the save the dates and RSVP’s with you now and will do another blog post shortly with the Wedding invitations, Menus and Wedding program/order of service.

The design features floral swirls and scroll-work with an elegant swirly calligraphy font.

Logo Design – The Business of Weddings Ireland

This series of blog posts will look at some recent logo designs I have completed and the process I followed to get to the final design.

The basics:

The first thing I need to do when a client contacts me is to establish the basics. To do this, I send them a custom questionnaire with several questions which helps me to determine a few things.

  1. What line of business or service they are in.
  2. What they want their new design to do for them.
  3. The image they want to create with their design.
  4. What types of media the logo will be used on.

The Design Brief:

The Business of Weddings Ireland is an educational marketing and networking event for wedding professionals held annually.  The event had an existing logo but owner Annie Byrne felt it needed to be updated to something a little more “professional and creative” yet still retain it’s simplicity.

Here was the original logo:Original 'The Business of Weddings Ireland'

Annie liked her existing logo colours so wanted the new design to keep along the same lines. She preferred the logo to be more business-like.

The logo was going to be used on the website, for email marketing, other promotional material at the conference. It needed to be based on muted colours for a relaxing feel.

First step:

I normally start by working on font selections. Some designers will start with the graphic but I find once I have the font selected, that it gives me a better feel for what the graphic needs to achieve.

I provided Annie with a number preselected fonts based on her answers given in the design brief questionnaire. I included a number of serif and sans serif fonts for her to take a look at. Some fonts we looked at were Helvetica, Bodoni, Akzidenz Grtotesk , Futura and several others.

After looking at these fonts together we decided that we should integrate a script font in some way to soften the design. We finally decided on a combination of Bondoni  Condensed, Bodoni Regular and Montecarlo Pro. You can see it below.

Second step:

Time to work on the graphic.  As the conference is for wedding professionals and networking, I decided to work on logomarks that would include a networking element, a wedding element or both.

A – A stylised group of 8 people all interlinked in a circle to show the networking element but also reminiscent of looking down on the top of a diamond ring (minus the heads of course!).

B – Was a simple bride and groom design.

C – 4 people with arms outstretched around a Celtic Triskelion which represents actions, cycles, progress, revolution and competition.

D – A simple diamond design.

E – Three-tiered wedding cake, with curly cake stand, ribbon and heart.

After further discussions with Annie, She decided the cake element would be the best. So here we have them combined.

Next we looked at colours. We considered approximately 16 different colour variations, some along the original logos colours and some which Annie may not have considered originally.

Annie decided on this as the final arrangement and colour. I think it really works and fits in with her original design brief.  Below it, are the icons for use on Facebook and twitter.

If you’ve read this far, congratulations! I’ll have to make the next blog shorter!

Until next time,

Cathy.

Free printable mini cupcake toppers

Ooh managed to get this blog post together sooner than I thought!

I love baking cupcakes but unfortunately I’ve had to curb my baking in order to save my waist line. I still love designing and making cupcake toppers though. I find them quite therapeutic especially when I see the delighted faces of children and adults alike!

They make a fabulous addition to a party table. I genuinely think that they help to make a party that bit more visually attractive and exciting.

Today, I am sharing some very simple mini flag topper design that you can download and print at home for personal use only. These are really easy to make but look superb on top of cupcakes or anything else really!
You can print these out on coloured cardstock that you can buy in any craft store to match your party theme.

Blogging or lack there of

I have been very very absent from my blog of late. lots to do and very little time.

I will be remedying this shortly though with blog posts on free party printables, new inspiration boards for candy buffets and new seasonal products!

Please bear with me :-)

Candy buffet labels & problems with Silhouette SD

As you may have read below, I opened a Candy Buffet label store on Zazzle, which I’m currently stocking with lots of designs.

I am toying with the idea of hand making some of these designs myself. At the moment I have it easy, all I need worry about it the design end and Zazzle look after the rest. But I must say I love being creative and seeing the process through from start to finish.

So I bought a Silhouette SD cutting machine with the intention of using it to help me cut out my labels easily. I use Adobe Illustrator CS5 at the moment. The SD was meant to be able to work with Illustrator but I spent all day today at it and just can’t get it to work properly. I’d love if anyone could point me in the direction of a good forum that has lots of people who use their silhouette with Illustrator! Leave a comment below if you know of one. I’ve spent hours googling and haven’t come up with anything of use. I’m about to lose my mind so have walked away from it today, though I’m sure I’ll be dreaming about it tonight!

I have lots of sample labels printed out now in various styles ready to be cut. I purchased a Xcut 3 inch circle craft punch the other day and have ordered in some of the smaller punches as well just in case I don’t get the SD to work with illustrator. The Xcut is great, have tested it on a few labels and am impressed if I do say so myself.

I’ll put up some pictures once I have time to take them!

In the meantime, I’ve included some more of my candy labels below. They can be used for anything really, not just candy buffets. Use them as favour labels, place settings, great for kids birthdays and showers or for more formal occasions like weddings and other events. If you would like a specific design or don’t see you color scheme, leave a comment below or email me through my store! Remember these come in several different shapes and you can put whatever text you like on them

The first selection are full of gum ball machines, candies or sweets and Ice-creams. These are perfect for kids birthday parties or fun whimsical weddings! Simply click on the image to see it up close or to purchase!
